Flowers for My Mother pays tribute to my mother, who became a single parent when I was fourteen after the sudden death of my father, this series acknowledges her unnoticed and unacknowledged grief. She managed to maintain a household, work full-time, and care for three teenagers while navigating her own loss. The series incorporates archival images of my mother both as a new mother and as an individual from the past. These images are collaged with large fabric panels printed with photographs of flowers I’ve taken, representing all the unspoken love and acknowledgment for her unseen labor and sacrifices. Now that I am a mother myself, I see her struggles and sacrifices in a new light, highlighting the often overlooked emotional labor of parenting.
